CHRISTINE PACAUD: SIGNS & TERRITORIES OF PASSION! Posted on: August 19, 2017 By: Amable López
The workshop is a space of power. The "chosen" space of the artistic condition. The somatic and metaphysical factory of dreams and projects of the fable-writer. The workshop reflects his/her personality, his/her ideas, his/her energetic disposition and his/her creative knowledge. Precisely, this is ipso facto fulfilled when we enter the studio of French artist Christine Pacaud (born 1957), located in her beachfront home at "Los Nómadas" in Las Terrenas, province of Samaná, Dominican Republic; where she has been living and working for more than a decade.
Last Frida, August 11th, just after she returned from France, I had the pleasure of meeting her and talking in her studio-gallery at "Los Nómadas". The main reason for this meeting has been her outstanding participation in the exhibition "Flora and Fauna", organized by the District & Co. Gallery of Santo Domingo (05-07 / 2017). In this exhibition, Faracci Amaro included a selection of paintings by Christine Pacaud that impressed visitors with her excellent command of the various techniques she uses, the dignity and elegance of her aesthetic design and the freshness of her pulsating pictorial diction, as can be experienced in pieces such as "Dans le secret de mon cœur" (Deep down in my heart); "Coté jardin" (“On the garden side”, a double-entendre as this is how the French say “stage-right” in theatres) ; "J'en rêvais" (It was my dream) and "Harmonie", (which speaks for itself).
Tables, easels, brushes, pigments, templates, tools, books, photographs, intimate objects, dozens of canvases and works on paper or wood and sketches in mixed media, plus the beautiful creative chaos of several pieces still in progress and others already finished, dis-order and line Pacaud’s unaffected yet stylish studio. It is a magical anchorage "on the very path of the Sun", where nature, the transparent air of the islands and the translucent waters of the Caribbean become essential elements of her latest production. A translucent space of talent and creative fervor that calls for further meetings in order to fine-tune wavelengths and deepen the appreciation that her work deserves.
Just before I entered the workshop, however, as I peeked through the stained glass window, I was struck by a large-scale pictorial work entitled "A la poursuite de l'amour" (In pursuit of love), a pictorial space of foggy appearance, at the same time dense, fluid and resonant, animated by a splendid array of brushstrokes, visual graphemes, signs, gestures, rescissions and chromatic allusions in which whitewashed, pink, sunset yellow, vegetal green and faded yellow touches emerge, as well as the soft and delicious glazes of the grisaille.
Christine Pacaud’s pictorial poetics is eloquent. She prefers expression to perfection, informality to complexity; the fluid to the static, the elusive to the mundane, the obscure to the pathetic, the virtual to the here and there, the invisible to the figurative, ecstasy to catharsis. The evolutionary process that has infused Pacaud’s work during the last decade is made visible in the very creation of her emotional pictorial abstraction. Her creative work integrates some dynamic, subtle and attractive sets of planes, glazes and matter/color superimpositions that refer us to her arduous yet pleasurable search for chromatic balance, spontaneous expressive gestures and the energetic effectiveness of the pictorial surface.The memorial traces, the signs, the textures and the suggestive polychromy that activate Pacaud’s pictorial spaces crystallize her enigmatic and authentic existential complexity, as well as her most vital concerns and aesthetic experiences. Between Europe and the Caribbean, Pacaud has found the key to the sublime state of creativity. This privileged stance allows for levels of freedom and a transcendent disposition that lead her to transform any tool, material fragment or expressive element into a valid resource for creation."I now try to reach new spaces of freedom. I always start working with very fluid, successive layers. Each one of them arises from the preceding one. I completely abandon myself to my sensations and my impressions of the moment. Stratum after stratum, the rhythms are installed, the breathing of the cloth is amplified, the material starts up and then, the signs, the traces, the writing, appear. The painting then becomes gestural, physical, danceable. It is a work of contrast. Everything is sweetness and strength; violence and rest; Fury and fullness. There is much antagonism between the serenity of fluids and the agitation of the extremely stylized figurative world. But these contradictions are essential for me because they symbolize life in all its splendor "...Christine Pacaud’s lyrical abstractions are saturated with ideas, lessons, proofs and omens. Her works materialize as poetic-reflective passages; as rhizomatic evidence of their legitimate creative delivery. She materializes her ontological connection with the foundations of the plastic fact and the pictorial system with extraordinary informality, risking and raising imaginary territories that place us on the edge of surprise and the unspeakable. The essential material of Christine Pacaud's painting is her passion. Then, she bets radically on freedom and commitment to truthfulness. Her work is authentic because so is her vital, creative and spiritual journey.

El taller es un espacio de poder. El espacio “elegido” de la condición artística. La somática y metafísica fábrica de sueños y proyectos del fabulador. El taller refleja su personalidad, sus ideas, su disposición energética y su saber creador. Precisamente, esto se cumple ipso facto cuando entramos al estudio de la artista francesa Christine Pacaud (1957), localizado en el playero residencial “Los Nómadas” de Las Terrenas, provincia de Samaná, donde ella reside y trabaja desde hace mas de una década.
El pasado viernes 11, justo después de su regreso desde Francia, he tenido la dicha de encontrarle y dialogar en su estudio-galería “Los Nómadas”. El motivo principal de este encuentro ha sido su destacada participación en la exposición “Flora y Fauna”, organizada por la Galería District & Co. de Santo Domingo (05-07/2017). En esta muestra, Faracci Amaro incluyó una selección de obras pictóricas de Christine Pacaud que impresionaron por su excelente dominio de los medios, la dignidad y elegancia de su factura estética y la frescura de su palpitante dicción plástica, como las tituladas “Dans le secret de mon coeur”; “Cote jardín”; “J’en revais” y “Harmonie”.
Mesas, caballetes, pinceles, pigmentos, plantillas, herramientas, libros, fotos, objetos íntimos, decenas de lienzos y obras sobre papel, madera y bocetos en técnica mixta, más el bello caos creativo de varias obras en proceso junto a otras ya terminadas, des-ordenan y estañan el “terrenal” y coqueto estudio de Christine Pacaud. Un ancladero mágico “en el mismo trayecto del Sol”, donde la naturaleza, el aire transparente de las islas y las traslucidas aguas del Caribe se tornan elementos esenciales de su más reciente producción. Un espacio traslucido de talento y fervor creativo que reclama el reencuentro para profundizar el diálogo y la valoración que merece su trabajo.
Pero, justo antes de entrar al taller, a través de la vidriera, me impacta una obra pictórica de gran formato titulada “A la poursuite de l’amour” (A la persecución del amor), un espacio pictórico de apariencia neblinosa, al mismo tiempo denso, fluido y resonante, animado mediante un lúcido juego de pinceladas, grafemas visuales, signos, gestuales, celajes, rescisiones y alusiones cromáticas en el que subyacen y afloran unos toques encalados, rosas, amarillo ocaso, verde vegetal y amarelado, así como las tenues y deliciosas veladuras de la grisalla.
La poética pictórica de Christine Pacaud es elocuente. Ella antepone la expresión a la perfección, la informalidad a la complexión; la fluidez a lo estático, lo recóndito a lo consabido, lo velado a lo patético, lo susceptible a lo real, lo invisible lo figural, el éxtasis a la catarsis. En la misma factura de sus emotivas abstracciones pictóricas se advierte el proceso evolutivo que sostiene la obra de Christine Pacaud durante la última década. Su factura integra unos dinámicos, sutiles y atractivos juegos de planos, veladuras y superposiciones materico-tonales que nos remiten a su ardua y placentera búsqueda del equilibrio cromático, la espontánea gestualidad expresiva y la efectividad energética de la superficie pictórica.
Los rastros memoriales, los signos, las texturas y la sugestiva policromía que activan los espacios pictóricos de Christine Pacaud, cristalizan su enigmática y auténtica complejidad existencial, así como sus más caras inquietudes vitales y experiencias estéticas. Entre Europa y el Caribe, Pacaud ha encontrado la clave para acceder al estado sublime de la creación. Esta estancia privilegiada le permite unos niveles de libertad y una disposición trascendente que le llevan a transformar cualquier herramienta, fragmento material o elemento expresivo como recurso válido de creación.
“Intento ahora llegar a unos nuevos espacios de libertad. Siempre empiezo el trabajo con capas sucesivas muy fluidas. Cada una de ellas surge de la precedente. Me abandono completamente a mis sensaciones y mis impresiones del momento. Estrato tras estrato, los ritmos se instalan, la respiración de la tela se amplifica, la materia se pone en marcha y entonces, los signos, los rastros, la escritura, aparecen. La pintura se vuelve entonces gestual, física, bailable. Es un trabajo de contraste. Todo es dulzura y fuerza; violencia y descanso; furia y plenitud. Hay mucho antagonismo entre la serenidad de los fluidos y la agitación del mundo figurativo extremadamente estilizado. Pero estas contradicciones son para mí esenciales porque simbolizan la vida en todo su esplendor”…
Las abstracciones líricas de Christine Pacaud, están saturadas de ideas, lecciones, pruebas y presagios. Sus obras se materializan como pasajes poético-reflectivos; como pruebas rizomáticas de su legítima entrega creadora. Ella materializa su ontológica conexión con los fundamentos del hecho plástico y el sistema pictórico con extraordinaria informalidad, arriesgándose y suscitando unos territorios imagéticos que nos sitúan al filo de la sorpresa y lo indecible. La materia esencial de la pintura de Christine Pacaud es su pasión. Luego, ella apuesta radical a la libertad y al compromiso con su verdad de vida. Su obra es auténtica porque su aventura vital, creativa y espiritual lo es primero…
